TikTok formerly known as Musically, has created a huge following. I personally am very familiar with Musically aka TikTok because of my younger daughter. She was very active on Musically/TikTok when she was in 7th, 8th and 9th grade. Her followers were over 24,000 and still has a similar following. Before Covid we attended Playlist Live in Orlando, Florida. This is a Convention that meets every year to showcase Social Media artists. Kids and adults from all over attend to meet their favorite Social Media personalities. Playlist Live also has speakers that are very informative. I once listened to a Coming Out story and a Transgender story and how they put it all on TikTok. My daughter looked forward to this every year until Covid hit the world. 2022 is the first year that Playlist Live is back. We already have our hotel room and tickets.
Now don’t get me wrong there were a lot of negative aspects about her being so “Musically Famous.” However, for her the good outweighed the bad for her self-esteem. She had young kids asking to meet up with her to take a picture. It was sweet and it made her gain confidence in herself.
Fast forward to the Pandemic and TikTok explodes this time with all ages. What was a family to do with all of those hours and days stuck at home? The answer is create a TikTok. What was a teenager to do when not being able to attend school or be with their friends? The answer is create a TikTok. Celebrities, artists and broadway performers were cut off from the world. How were they able to share their talents with their fans? The answer is create a TikTok. It was like “TikTok Mania.” Many thought it to be a fad that would end once things returned to normal. Unbelievably, as of yet things have not turned back to normal. TikTok is still going strong. Observers of this social media platform have noticed a trend that TikTok can improve your mental health.
This platform became a place for youth to express their mental health struggles and to be able to find groups of people they can relate to. This trend began to bleed into all ages including adults. If you followed specific platforms you could watch how an individuals world evolved, how they worked through issues, attempted bucket list activities, expressed their feelings regarding their depression, anxiety or even shared life stories. People even began to talk about their mental illness and intern would educate others about the symptoms and side effects of mental health issues. The different medications they would take and how they would cope when feeling out of control. TikTok became a platform where children, youth, adolescents, adults and elderly were able to improve their mental health. This is an amazing phenomenon to me especially with my early personal experiences with Musically/TikTok. How this fun way to express yourself creatively actually became a self-help tool and coping skill that many use to this day. The is The Magic of TikTok!
The Magic of TikTok is not for everybody. Especially, because it is a public forum. So this got me thinking. Video Journaling is another way to privately video yourself without sharing it with the world. Video Journaling is a lot easier than writing and you can also observe a lot of things about yourself when watching the videos back. There are always unexpressed verbal emotions that we can see through facial expressions and movements. Video Journaling can open you up to this insight into yourself.
The way I love to use Video Journaling is by chronicling by vacations, family events, parties, pool days, city days, beach days and all that these events entail. When looking back at videos as time moves on they can help you jog memories, become a way to express beautiful moments, enhance creativity and photography skills. If you are feeling down, missing someone or need a mental health break watch one of these videos that you have created. Documenting your experiences, travel, events and gatherings can be used in the future to watch as a coping mechanism.
This weeks Podcast will focus on The Magic of TikTok, Video Journaling and how you can begin to use social media as a positive way to express yourself, emotions and feelings.
