Motivation is a very big word in our daily vocabularies, thought process’ and how we spend the day. Motivation can be a very hard thing to conjure up on a daily or even hourly basis. We all have those lazy days where we just want to plop on the couch with a cozy blanket and vegetate. Believe me there is nothing wrong with that.  I call it a Mental Health Day.  I am referring to the times where we need to get things accomplished and we just can’t find the motivation to be productive.  There always will be times where we feel unmotivated.  The clue is what do you do when this lack of motivation starts to interfere with your daily responsibilities.

Close your eyes for a moment and envision how you motivate yourself.  Really focus on this in your minds eye.  Start to think about all the different aspects of this activity and task of Motivating yourself. I am confident that we all have the basic ways in which we motivate ourselves.  Sometimes it might just be a strong cup of coffee to increase your energy level.  My Motivator of choice that is easily accessible is music.  In fact I have music playing through my earbuds right now to help motivate me to write this piece.  I look at it his way,  we all have our own personal buttons that we can push to help us to get more proactive and show initiative.  These buttons are your own and only you know how to push them at the right time to increase your motivation.  Close your eyes again and think about what buttons you need to push to increase your energy level.

Congratulations, your first step to increasing your motivational level has been completed. So now let’s get to work to identify new and creative ways to Motivate you. The Beauty Around You is where I would like to focus today.  Get up from your desk, couch or chair and walk into a room that is pleasing to you.  Even better take a walk outside to get some fresh air and change your environment.  The exercise is about to begin.

I want you first take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Close your eyes and envision the room or outdoors in your minds eye. Open your eyes and now really look at your surroundings.  The colors, shapes, sounds, smells, temperature and how your body actually feels in this environment. Take some time to really focus on all of the cues in your surroundings.  Now I want you to focus on your body and what you are feeling internally.  Do you notice any physical or emotional changes while being in this new environment?

Next task is to look for the beauty in this setting, even if you are in a new room inside a building.  There is beauty in almost every environment that surrounds us.  Sometimes, even in the sad moments there is beauty.  Maybe it’s just the way people are supporting each other.  I want you to focus hard on the beauty that you see in this environment.  How can this beauty Motivate you?  If it doesn’t, then move to a different location.  We are all so busy and lead hectic lives that we don’t really stop to take the beauty in that surrounds us in our daily lives. Nature is what motivates me.  If I am feeling lazy and I need energy to move forward I walk outside no matter where I am.  I focus on my surrounds, look for the Beauty that Surrounds Me and I remain in that moment for some time.  Sometimes it just takes looking up at the sky to watch the birds flying in beautiful patterns in the sky.  I watch them as they dance and move around the billowy clouds.  This moment creates relaxation, lowering my blood pressure and allows me to give my brain a breather in Beautiful Surroundings. Monotony can cause the brain to become tired and lazy which leads to a Lack of Motivation.  Physically moving your body and focusing on the Beauty that Surrounds you is a new Coping Skill that you can add to the way you deal with a Lack of Motivation.

Fergie, is coming through loud and clear in my earbuds and I just want to walk away from my computer and take a short walk outside.  Her lyrics and beats encourage me to go out and look for the Beauty that Surrounds Me.  The key to creating a healthy mindset is to open yourself up to new and creative ways in your surroundings.  This is an exercise in concentration, determination and the desire to create a healthy lifestyle mindset.  Join me this week for my podcast where I will discuss further about the Beauty that Surrounds You and how you can take control of your world and life.
