What does the end of the year mean to you? Happy New Year and Auld Lang Syne all wrapped up in a pretty package as the year comes to a close. Horns, fireworks, champagne and New Years Resolutions are at hand as the the year ends. I have learned over the years that individuals have such different ideas of the way the New Year should be celebrated. There is the notion this time of year can come with a lot of pressure to celebrate the New Year in big fashion.

I am here to tell you My Friend, that there is no guidebook or set of rules on how you should celebrate the coming of the New Year. I have struggled with how I should Celebrate each year and what others expected of me. I don’t know about you but some years I want to party and others I feel comfortable staying home and watching the ball drop. Do you ever find yourself with this same internal struggle? The turmoil of these decisions can be quit anxiety provoking.

If you can relate to this concept, then start anew this coming New Years Eve with a new perspective on how you should celebrate. I want you to first realize that there is no right or wrong way to celebrate. If you chose to go to bed early to ring in the new year what is wrong with that? “Nothing” If you chose to attend a party, what is wrong with that? “Nothing” If you want a quiet evening at home, what is wrong with that? “Nothing” I assume that you are catching on by this point. Let this New Years Eve be exactly what you feel it needs to be for your own mental health.

Let’s focus now on you accomplishments and unfinished business. It’s important to always acknowledge the things you have completed and done well at. I believe that everyone should boost their ego by first focusing on things they are proud of. The things that are unaccomplished, are not failures. I would love for you to instill this thought process with inside yourself. Allowing this to register in your brain will create a healthy environment for you emotionally. Try to look at this area of your life as a way to improve on yourself and goals.

It is important that you realize these personal goals don’t have to have a time line. If you lead with this notion you will be less stressed about how and when you accomplish this goal. I believe that it is imperative to maintain your mental health by acknowledging that some goals will take longer than others to complete.  This does not mean that you failed in this area. Reminding yourself that you are a work in progress and you are moving through your struggles and not avoiding the challenges. Honestly, looking at the past year and the new year is all about how you reframe your thoughts.

Treat yourself kindly and gently when you have not completed goals. The goal is not perfection, it is that we are constantly moving forward and evolving. If you find you are stuck in this process, please reach out to a Licensed Therapist or a Life Coach to assist you in the process of completing your goals.

It would be beautiful if you could take on this New Year as a challenge in self-growth and evolving into your future. There is no pressure here, you must go at your own pace. My goal is to let you know that you are ok, capable and able to take on this challenge. The first step in this process is to believe in yourself. Repeat this mantra “This year is my year, I can evolve and improve myself and my world in my future.” I SALUTE EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU ON THE NEW YEAR TO COME.
